Tennessee Scholar Requirements

Q: What is the TENNESSEE SCHOLARS program?
A: TENNESSEE SCHOLARS is a recognition program for outstanding Tennessee high school students.
Q: What are the requirements to graduate as a TENNESSEE SCHOLAR?
A: To be a TENNESSEE SCHOLAR, a student must meet certain academic, attendance, behavior, and volunteer service criteria.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:
English - 4 credits regular or above
Math- 4 credits (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and 1 higher math.
Bridge Math does not qualify.
Science-3 lab sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics preferred)
Social Studies - 3 credits meeting graduation requirements
Personal Finance - .5 credit
Career-Technical/AP/Dual Enrollment - combination of 2 credits in these areas not counted in other requirement categories
Foreign Language - 2 credits in the same language
Fine Arts - 1 credit
PE/Health - 1.5 credits to meet graduation requirements
GRADE AVERAGE - Student must maintain a C average and have no F as a final semester grade in any course.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
95% required - Student must have missed no more than 36 total days in 4 years.
DISCIPLINE REQUIREMENTS
No out of school suspensions/expulsions
VOLUNTEER SERVICE
80 hours - These hours must be done outside the school day.

Q: Why should I apply to be a TENNESSEE SCHOLAR?
A: In 2011 more than half of Tennessee students who took the minimum Tennessee Scholars course requirements met all four ACT benchmarks for College and Career Readiness. The average ACT score was 23.9 and the average number of volunteer hours was 111. More than 22.000 students have already graduated as TENNESSEE SCHOLARS. Currently, these students can take advantage of 45 post secondary school scholarships and many private scholarships.
